IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alice Susan
Mccarthy
November 16, 1931 – July 16, 2023
Alice Susan McCarthy, nee McDonnell, 91 years. Beloved wife of Judson D. McCarthy Jr. Loving mother of Anne McCarthy, Susan (the late Richard) St. Denis, and Judson D. III (Kimberly) McCarthy. Cherished grandmother of Kyle and Andrew McCarthy. Dear great grandmother of Savannah and Jackson. Fond aunt of many nieces and nephews. A life-long Chicago area resident, Susan was a dedicated nurse obtaining her nursing diploma from Northwestern University. She began in Maternity at Passavant Memorial Hospital in 1953. Over time she served in other specialty areas including epidemiology (lovingly referred to as The Bug Lady), concluding her career spending many years in 'the best job she ever had' as a hospice nurse. In 1956 she married Judd and they soon started their family, eventually outgrowing their apartment and moving to their long time home in St. Thomas More parish. Her dedication extended well into her household where she was a stay at home mom, raising Anne, Suzie, and Mac with a faithful, firm, and often funny hand. Susan was thoroughly invested in her children, volunteering at their grammar school in various roles, including coordinating the school library program in the 1970's. She also coordinated the Health Room nurses and volunteers at Mother McAuley High School, returning to work toward the end of the decade. As the children advanced in their educational pursuits Susan did as well, graduating from Lewis University in 1982 with a B.S. in Nursing. While continuing to work she began volunteering at Chicagoland Radio Information Service, a radio station for the visually impaired, as an on-air reader of news and current events. At the same time she began a long tenure with Educational Tape Recording for the Blind reading and recording text books for visually impaired students. When she read aloud into the microphone everyone in the house received an education on a variety of subjects. Susan and Judd spent their retirement years in Crestwood, enjoying their expanding family of grandchildren and great grandchildren, and the volunteering continued. They were both Eucharistic Ministers for Christ Hospital for over 30 years and heavily involved in the St. Vincent DePaul Society at Incarnation Church. Susan's wit and wisdom will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
