Preceded in death by her parents, Miles and Margaret (Thompson) Szczurek, her husband Louis Joseph Bervid Jr., and other family members (Robert,Gene, and Michael Szczurek and brothers-in-law Stephen Bervid and Donald Fishbein).Jeanne attended Catholic schools from primary to high school, graduating in 1960 from Saint ProcopiusHigh School. Her faith was very important to her, and she prayed every night for family and friends.Jeanne married her childhood sweetheart, Louis Bervid Jr., whom she dated until a break-up after whichtime Lou sent her a letter asking to get back together. Knowing Lou and his teasing ways, she wisely keptthe letter as proof to refute what she knew would be his future claim that she had begged him to getback together. In 1961, Jeanne and Lou married and celebrated life together for 55 years which provided numerousopportunities to enjoy various interests and do the things they loved. These adventures ranged fromtravel, day trips, sporting events, and time with family and friends. Jeanne was a realist and, with ahusband in law enforcement, slept with a police scanner by her bedside so she could be aware ofpossible imminent danger and pray for her husband as he worked to protect the communities in whichthey lived.Jeanne was a loving and kind mother to her three children, Laura (Richard) Ochoa, Sandra Bervid, andLouis (Christine) Bervid III. Jeanne’s quiet dignity, sharp intelligence, sacrificial nature, and humblebeginnings prepared her as a wife, mother, sister, and friend. She was grandmother to David and Bryan Duran, Zachary and Samantha Slanger, and Alexandra Bervid.Jeanne felt privileged to be great grandmother/”gate gam” to Dylan Duran and Natalie and RileySlanger.Jeanne was a big sister and an active member of the Szczurek 7, a group of her and her siblings whotexted daily to share jokes, news, support, and their love for one another in big and little ways. Jeanneleaves behind a beautiful legacy of memories to her sister Dr. Christina Krause, Suzanne (Donald)Fishbein, Margaret (Bruce) Stopka, Miles Jr. (Patricia) Szczurek, Michael (Mary) Szczurek, and Katherine(Daniel) Kennedy. Jeanne enjoyed playing pinochle, poker, and especially dominoes with the Bervid sideof the family, which included Bettyann and Ramon Zevallos and Stephen and Darlene Bervid. Jeanne wasalso aunt and great aunt to numerous nieces and nephews and recently helped plan a family reunionwhich was attended by multiple generations.Jeanne had a long career as an accountant, back in the days when most mothers stayed at home. Thistaught her children to be independent and responsible individuals and provided additional opportunitiesfor her income to be used, not only for necessities, but also for special things like family vacations toDaytona Beach and nice dinners. After retiring from GWK Enterprises, Inc., Jeanne and Lou moved from Geneseo, Illinois to Kingsport,Tennessee. While Lou fished, Jeanne, an avid reader, joined him with a book, and they later picnicked orenjoyed local restaurants. After her husband’s health began to deteriorate, Jeanne and Lou moved backto Illinois where she lovingly cared for him without complaint. As was her way, she lived and foughtagainst obstacles, mentally shutting the door to the stress and hardships she endured to enjoy life withher family and friends. Jeanne’s children have always recognized their mother as a truly kind and wiseindividual who, especially in later years, expanded her role from mother to cherished friend. Jeanne will be greatly missed.
