William J. Cosgrave (Cos), age 102 of Alsip, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband of the late Anne (Sheehan) Cosgrave; devoted father of Susan Gajos, Kathy (John) Flaherty, Michael Cosgrave, Kevin (Diane) Cosgrave, Mary (Stephen) Flaherty, Noreen (Dennis) Polacek and Peggy (Hank) Lenzen. Cherished son of the late Michael and Nonie (Fahey) Cosgrave.
He was a proud grandfather of 19 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. He was a dear brother to the late Mae (Roger) Byrnes and a dear brother-in-law to the late James Sheehan, the late Thomas (Sophie) Sheehan, the late Mary (John) Whalen, the late Margaret (Mel) Betts, the late John (Betty) Sheehan, and the late William Sheehan. He was also a fond uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Cos was a proud alumnus of St. Gabriel Grammar School and De La Salle Institute. He served his country proudly in the Army during World War II. Cos was a 4th Degree Grand Knight for the Madonna Council 1135 of the Knights of Columbus. Cos was a devoted longtime parishioner of St Gall and was deeply involved in many of the parish activities. He was fondly called “Bingo Bill” by many. Cos was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bulls and The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
Visitation Monday, April 6, 2026 from 3:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Funeral Tuesday, April 7th beginning with Chapel Prayers at 10:45 A.M. from the Becvar & Son Funeral Home, 5539 W. 127th Street, Crestwood, to St. Christina Catholic Church, 3342 W. 111th Street, Chicago, for an 11:30 A.M. Mass. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls (www.MercyHome.org).
