Dorothy Novotny, nee Chatt, recent resident of Merrionnette Park and Crete, Illinois, died Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Palos Hospital after a brief illness. She lived a full life of 94 years and was especially happy to have stayed in her own home until the end.
Born in Chicago in 1924, to Frank and Anna Chatt, Dorothy attended school in Chicago and was a dedicated employee of Talman Bank on Kedzie Avenue. She was a member of St. Christina and later St. Liborius Catholic Church. She was married to Frank Novotny and after his death was a fond companion of Walter Gratz.
Dorothy was a member of the Women of the Moose and had many friends in that organization. She volunteered at St. Christina Early Childhood Center and had fond memories of her time spent with the children.
Dorothy loved good food and socializing. She enjoyed shopping and playing cards with friends as well as various arts and crafts, specializing in mosaic tile work. She baked wonderful crescent cookies which were a favorite to all. She was a great fan of movies and knew all the old stars. In her younger days, Dorothy loved dancing, spending many pleasant evenings at the Trianon Ballroom in Chicago. She enjoyed vacationing in Wisconsin, spending her time fishing and relaxing with her family.
Dorothy is survived by her two precious cats, Suzie and Gracie, her “adopted” Gratz family, Roseann Burke, Virginia Shorey (Albert), Marylou Rymut (Eugene), and Margaret Mary Gratz, her dedicated caregivers, Brenda Segneri and Dorothy Reaves, who together made her later years so comfortable, and many others people who crossed her path. She will be fondly remembered by all.
