On Sunday, July 24th, our hearts were shattered. Our beloved Dad and Pa, Fred Olszowka, joined his high school sweetheart and wife, Lorraine (Kolanko), in heaven. They met while Laurie and her father were shopping for a Christmas tree where Fred worked. She always said that year was the ugliest tree because she couldn’t take her eyes off of him.
Loving father of Kathy (Tim) Hensley, Sue (Tim) Saffran, Therese (Archie) Prado, Janice Olszowka (Mike) and Tony Olszowka. Devoted Pa to Lauren (Bill) Whims, Sarah (Alan) Salazar, Juan, Mateo, Belle, the late Alyssa, and the late Rachel Prado. Cherished Great-Pa to Kaelin Whims, Lucas Salazar, and Adelyn Whims. Dear brother to the late Ronald Olszowka and James Olszowka. Fond uncle, cousin and friend to many including his longtime friend and bingo buddy, Therese Buc. Fred cherished time with his family and he hosted many gatherings for holidays, birthdays, and get togethers at his home both in Chicago and Orland Park.
Fred was a retired lather with Local 74-L. He spent his retirement tinkering with computers, various hobbies, and tasks around the house or watching Wheel of Fortune. He spent many years of service as an officer in the Slovak Catholic Sokol, First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, and the National Slovak Society.
Fred was the patriarch of his family. He was our go to in all aspects from home repairs, financial questions, to family history. He could always be counted on and his presence will be greatly missed.
